Your Personal Details

Areyoulocal.co.uk is different from other online communities.

We're here to help you plug into your local community... the real world, real people - perhaps even your future best friends - just outside your front door.

A great first step to building mutual trust is to tell other people a little about yourself, and adding information to your personal details is a good place to start!

These instructions include:

There are other ways you can tell people about yourself. Click here to find out more.

How to Open the 'Edit my Details' form
1If you're exploring a group or a business...

...then click the menu heading.

Not sure what you're exploring? Check the title bar.

2Display your existing details

You can do this by clicking on the 'My details' option in the 'Home' menu, or by clicking here to display the form in a new window.

3Click the button

This displays a tabbed form titled 'Edit my details'.

A Guide to 'Edit My Details'

This form is organised into four tabbed panels. Click on the tabs (General, Location, Portrait, Further Details) to display each panel.

Once you've made your changes, click to save your changes.

1General Panel
Email address

We use this email address solely to notify you about certain events, e.g. to notify you if one of your articles has been approved for publishing, or to let you know that someone has sent you a message.

We promise:
Local name

Please enter the name you'd introduce yourself if meeting a neighbour for the first time. Usually, it'll just be your first name, but if there are two people nearby with the same first name, you might want to add the first letter of your surname too.

'Sonia', 'Dave P', 'Lilwen'
Why do we ask you for your real name? Click here to find out.

Local place

Give the name of your street, village, or apartment block.

'Chestnut Road', 'Upper Norton', 'Hardy Mansions'
2Location Panel

This panel shows a scrollable and zoomable map.

Click the map to pinpoint your location. To pan the map, drag it.

3Portrait Panel

You can upload a portrait of yourself. Just click the 'upload portrait' button.

We encourage everyone to upload their portrait so that neighbours can get to know one another more easily.

When you've uploaded and cropped your portrait, we then ask you to select just your head to use as a thumbnail.

A thumbnail is a small image that appears next to anything you've written in the website, such as a message in a street discussion forum.

Because it's very small (the diagram on the right shows the actual size), it's best if you select just your head so that it's easier to recognise you from your thumbnail. The diagram shows what we're looking for.

Areyoulocal.co.uk is different from other community websites, so please don't upload a picture of anything else!
